Course Description
This course presents a unique and engaging overview of profitability tactics for the hotel industry, with emphasis on product, rate and room inventory issues. We use a pedagogical technique known as "Discovery Instruction" where participants combine theory and practice in a competitive, real-time, experiential exercise.
The centerpiece of the course is The Competitive Hospitality Education Simulation Series - I (CHESS) exercise - an advanced real-time simulation of a hotel's rooms division. During the course of the programme, participants apply the principles introduced in discussion sessions in their own computer-based virtual hotels. CHESS provides a common frame of reference for discussions regarding yield and profitability issues, as well as a competitive environment which is realistic, fast-paced and fun.
Who is the course designed for?
This course is designed for supervisors and managers who are responsible for the strategic management of the rooms division. The course is also relevant to General Managers for smaller properties and those in other departments who would better like to understand the rooms division.
Benefits
Participants learn the latest concepts in revenue management and measuring, most accurately, profitability in the rooms division. They learn to make critical pricing, inventory and resource allocation decisions as windows of opportunity open and close. Employers benefit from maximum yield and profitability through effective rooms division management.
Objectives
- Develop effective decision-making skills with respect to rooms division
- Develop a value-added perspective to rooms division
- Implement problem-solving strategies in a realistic rooms division simulation
- Learn how to maximise yield from rooms division
- Learn how to accurately measure profitability in rooms division
Course Content
Topics include:
-
Structuring the value-added components in the rooms division
- Managing the rate inventory plan at the front office
-
Measuring the contributing margins for multiple sources of trade
- Maximising yield in the rooms division
During the course of the programme, participants apply the principles introduced in discussion sessions in their own computer-based virtual hotels. Managers make critical pricing, inventory and resource allocation decisions as windows of opportunity open and close. There has simply never been a better way to illustrate the time-critical nature of yield management decision-making.
While CHESS is the very latest in hospitality management simulation, it is part of a long and distinguished evolution of management exercises, beginning with the Cornell Hotel & Restaurant Administration Exercises (CHASE & CRASE) which have been used successfully around the world for more than 30 years. CHESS incorporates all of the successful principles of Discovery Instruction pioneered by Cornell’s CHASE and CRASE, as well as adding exciting dimensions of real-time activity and hands-on participation.
