Diploma: Hospitality Management

Structure and Content

The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year* full-time course, which consists of on-campus terms and internship terms, where students complete a fully paid work placement with a hotel or resort.

Terms & Dates

Term 1 - on-campus (3 months)
Term 2 - on-campus (3 months)
Term 3&4 - internship (6-9 months)
Term 5 - on-campus (3 months)
Term 6 - on-campus (3 months)

* There is an early completion opportunity, should students complete the required 1000 hours of industry training in six months, rather than the prescribed nine months. 1000 hours in six months is approximate to a 40 hour working week. Term lengths can vary. Please contact the College for further details.

Content and Subject Descriptions

Terms 1 & 2 are spent on campus and provide an introduction to the principles and practice of hotel and restaurant operations. There is training in QRC’s hospitality demonstration suite, and training in the kitchen, restaurant and front office facilities of a working hotel.

The QRC Diploma also offers a choice of specialist subjects in either Event Management,or International Day Spa and Resort Management. Students will study four papers over the four on-campus terms, related to your specialisations. The running of Elective classes are subject to minimum number requirements, to ensure an optimal learning environment.  

Terms 5 & 6 focus on business management subjects such as managerial accounting, business and hospitality law, marketing management and operations management and cost control.

During the internship terms 3 & 4, you will complete 1000 hours of paid work in a hotel or resort. You will be working with the Internship Manager in term 2 and you will be able to complete your placement in Queenstown, anywhere in New Zealand or even an international placement if you are able to gain a visa for the country you choose.
