Work Experience in Queenstown's Tourism and Hospitality Industries
Queenstown Resort College offers students the opportunity for paid employment within the tourism and hospitality industry via the NZ Working Holiday scheme. Positions are within Queenstown tourism, hospitality and hotel operators and will be at a level based on availability and your current skill set.

Who Should Apply?
QRC Working Holiday placements are ideal for:
- Tourism, hospitality and hotel management students who need to undertake an industry work placement to fulfill course requirements (this includes intern abroad and study abroad programme students)
- Tourism, hospitality and hotel management graduates seeking further work experience to enhance their CVs
- Tourism and hospitality industry professionals looking for further work experience

Spirit of Queenstown Orientation (5 days)
QRC will prepare you for your Working Holiday experience with a tailored induction programme.
Candidates complete a one to five day Spirit of Queenstown Induction programme depending on their individual requirements, followed by the opportunity to be interviewed by industry for job placements. The duration of the Spirit Induction programme will be determined by the QRC Internship team based on a telephone or Skype interview.
Spirit Induction 1 (1-2 days):
- Typically the candidate will have considerable work experience and will be able to supply references from previous employers.
- The candidate will be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with English as their first language.
- The focus is work placement, and preparation for interviews.
- Most placement preparation will have been done by the Internship Manager prior to arrival.
- Meeting employers, interviews, and arranging for transport to and from interviews is the primary focus.
- Assistance is available to obtain IRD number and set up a bank account.
- The candidate will have access to QRC computers, the library, and QRC guest login if required.
Spirit Induction 2 (3 days):
- The candidate has strong hospitality skills and may be studying in a hospitality / tourism programme in NZ or overseas with a requirement to undertake a period of practical work experience. They will be able to supply relevant work references from past employers.
- The focus is on Queenstown orientation, geography, CV preparation, interview skills training, meeting prospective employers if arranged prior to arrival.
- English may be their first or second language. Candidates are able to converse freely in English, with confidence.
- QRC will help the candidate to obtain a NZ Tax (IRD) number and set up a bank account.
- The candidate will have access to QRC computers, the library, and QRC guest login if required.
Spirit Induction 3 (5 days):
- The candidate has basic hospitality skills and may be enrolled in a hospitality / tourism programme in NZ or overseas with a requirement to undertake a period of practical work experience.
- The focus will be on Cross Cultural Communication and learning about NZ culture and service style. Body language & communication skills, breaking through cultural barriers and power indexes.
- Candidates will learn about the history and geography of the Queenstown region, and experience activities which visitors to the region enjoy.
- English is generally a second language for these candidates and they should be at least at an intermediate level, equivalent to IELTS 5.5.
- QRC will help the candidate to obtain a NZ Tax (IRD) number and set up a bank account.
- The candidate will have access to QRC computers, the library, and QRC guest login if required.
Paid Employment
All jobs will be in frontline positions within Queenstown tourism, hospitality or hotel operators.
Typical jobs include: House Keeping Attendant, Receptionist, Porter, Food & Beverage Attendant, Bar Staff, Tourism Operations, Guest Services and Sales.
Your placement will depend on any previous work experience, your ‘fit’ with the property and team, and educational background. The more experience and interest you have in the tourism and hospitality industry, the better your prospect of securing a meaningful placement will be.

Spirit Induction 1 = $1000 Spirit Induction 2 = $1500 Spirit Induction 3 = $2000 The above fees include a non refundable placement fee of NZ$500 which is payable immediately to secure enrolment. |
Participants may wish to enroll in a General English programme before they commence their work placements or during their work placement if they need to improve their English language level. Please ask QRC for more details.
* Students must be fully engaged and attend 100% of the programme in order to progress to the interview stage.
Visa Information for International Students
International students will need to qualify for the Working Holiday Visa Scheme.
Working Holiday Visa: The Working Holiday Scheme allows you to work and holiday in New Zealand and is available for 18 - 30 year olds from select countries.
