Alumni profile: Vivian Lyngdoh

"I have come from having no experience at all when I started QRC to working in every operational department to now managing and negotiating contracts with some of New Zealand’s biggest players."

- Vivian Lyngdoh, Business Development Manager Accor Hotels, Wellington and QRC Hospitality Management Graduate.

Since graduating QRC, Vivian has worked for Eichardts Private Hotel, Millbrook Resort, Novotel and Ibis in a wide range of Reception, Food and Beverage and Reservations roles. Here he talks about his journey since graduating QRC in 2011.

Describe what you do in your role

I am the Business Development Manager for the Accor Hotels in Wellington whilst providing sales support to the other Accor Hotels across New Zealand. In a nutshell, my role includes contracting corporate companies who are interested in staying at our hotels and managing those accounts during the duration of the contracted period.

What has been your career journey since QRC?

I started off my career as a housekeeper at Eichardt’s Private Hotel where I progressed to work at Reception, Food and Beverage and Reservations. After my graduation from QRC, I was offered a job at Millbrook Resort as a reservationist. After a fantastic two years, I was offered a reservations agent role for the Novotel and Ibis Wellington - thereby after 4 marvellous years in Queenstown, I bid adieu and said hello to the windy little capital!

Under great management and leadership, after a year working in the Reservations Department for the Ibis and Novotel Wellington; I was offered a Secondment Role as a Business Development Executive for Accor Hotels and recently I was promoted to the Business Development Manager role for Accor Hotels.

How has your QRC experience helped you in your career?

I have come from having no experience at all when I started QRC to working in every operational department to now managing and negotiating contracts with some of New Zealand’s biggest players. One of the main reasons for that would be QRC and the tutors who have helped me along the way and this is something I will forever be grateful for.

"The QRC qualification is like a stamp of approval that yes, here is the person who has gone through the effort of learning about the industry and is interested in progressing his career thereby becoming a valuable asset to whichever employer he works for."

What is the attraction of working in hospitality?

Obviously, it would have to be the people. I am a lover of company and a keen enthusiast in hearing people’s stories. It is an industry made by the people for the people. We are working hard to create memorable experiences for all of those who just need a break from their daily routine. To be able to contribute to that is kind of amazing!
