Recently a group of 20 staff and students took part in the Canter for CanTeen charity fundraiser and raised $4404 for CanTeen – a support network for young people aged 13-24 and living with cancer.

Led by students Jock Barr and Michael Jones, the group shaved their heads before running from Glenorchy to Queenstown (46.1km). They raised cash through individual sponsorship and donations, a sausage sizzle and street-side money collections.

Thanks to all those who gave so generously. CanTeen is a great cause and we have been hugely inspired and motivated to help as much as we can.
Second Gold for QRC at the 2010 NZ University Snow Games

Winter Olympian and Queenstown Resort College (QRC) Adventure Tourism student Sarah Murphy has fended off skimpily-clad opponents at the 2010 NZ University Snow Games.

Heavy snowfall and chilly winds tested the tenacity of entrants in the cross-country skiing – especially Jamie Robinson who was clad in a skimpy Wonder Woman outfit, and her Otago team-mate Scott Ridley, who sported a lime green mini skirt with taffeta trim.

It was an eye-opener for Winter Olympian and Queenstown Resort College student Sarah Murphy, who predictably blitzed the field over the 3km course with a time of 11min 14sec – over 10 minutes quicker than nearest rival Tait-Jamieson, who was racing in the discipline for the first time.

"Any medal is an awesome medal, even chocolate ones – in fact, they're the best ones because you get to eat them," Murphy said. "It was super fun because I just love racing ... it's really cool for New Zealand to be getting into the cross-country scene."

Otago's Andrew Soundy dominated the men's 6km course in 25min 20sec to win gold – over 10min clear of Nick Sullivan, also of Otago, and Nicholas Francis, of Auckland.

"I was trying to hold off Sarah Murphy but she had the edge. I don't feel too bad because she did go to the Vancouver Olympics," Soundy, a member of the New Zealand junior team.

QRC student and also another Winter Olympian, Mitchey Greig secured gold in the women's skier-cross last week.

Queenstown Resort College Adventure Tourism Student Wins Gold

Snatching the gold medal in the Burton boarder-cross at the 2010 NZ Uni Snow Games took one crucial element according to Otago University student Tom Grootin.

"Just make sure everyone is looking at your bum as you cross the finish line," he quipped.

Grootin reigned supreme in a highly-charged final at Cardrona today (Wednesday), beating Canterbury University's Cody Logan by a snowflake. Otago's Nick Conroy finished third.

In the women's event, Canterbury's Georgina Allen emerged victorious from the latest tussle on the slopes with team-mate Hannah Orchard, while Otago's Mallory Nordblad was third.

Winter Olympian Mitchey Greig earned the Queenstown Resort College its inaugural Snow Games medal, predictably securing gold in the women's skier-cross ahead of Caitlin Feasey, of Canterbury, and Courtney Tate, of Otago.

"It was great to be out there on a skier cross course in New Zealand," Greig said. "It was a very mellow course but good fun though.

"It's just cool to get this sport more well known in New Zealand – if there's one way to grow its profile, it's by holding events like this."

Greig had enjoyed her first Uni Games experience, even rekindling old friendships – albeit while soaring over jumps at high speed.

"The four girls I was in the final with I used to race against in alpine so it was good to see each other again," she said.

"It was a great atmosphere and everyone is having an awesome time."

For Feasey, there was no shame in coming second to an Olympian.

"It was so good to watch what she does and try and follow her ... she was in my semi as well so I tried to pick up a few hints," she said.

Both the skier-cross and boarder-cross had proved popular amongst athletes, with 106 competitors contesting the events.

"It's not as boring as normal racing against the clock – there's a greater competitive element when you're racing side by side," Feasey said.

Otago's Matt Johnson, who claimed gold in the men's skier-cross, agreed.

"You've got all the jumps like freestyle but you're racing against other people so there's a bit of argy-bargy and some antics down the course," he said.

"It got a little hectic out there but I'm stoked with the win."

Stefan Calder, of Auckland University, and Tim Harker, of Lincoln University, rounded out the podium finishers.

The action continues with the Mad Wax ski and Burton board half pipe and slopestyle events at Snow Park tomorrow (Thursday), followed by the Big Air on Friday. The neighbouring Snow Farm will host cross country skiing on Friday afternoon.

Resort College Aims for Hot Debut

With two Winter Olympians in the ranks, it's no wonder Queenstown Resort College (QRC) is eyeing up a successful debut at the Uni Snow Games in Wanaka this month.

The annual fixture, run by University Sport New Zealand, will feature more than 150 students from tertiary institutes throughout the country, all vying for the coveted Michael Forrestal Memorial Trophy.

QRC will compete for the first time at the event, to be staged from August 29 to September 3, and boasts Olympians Mitchey Greig and Sarah Murphy in its seven-strong contingent, along with Rhys Cochrane, Matt Fallaver, Mark Jury, Charmaine Fitton and Giles Cooper.

"We are all really excited to be part of it," QRC domestic marketing and recruitment manager Sarah Cairns said.

"It gives our students the opportunity to experience a Uni Games event, which is fantastic." For Greig, 21, the opportunity to hurtle down a skier X course on home turf proved irresistible.

She even opted to compete at Snow Games instead of chasing the New Zealand GS title the same day.

"I'm just stoked to be back on a course. There's usually none in New Zealand," she said.

"We need to build skier X up here. There's a few people interested but there's not really the facilities.

"It's a lot of time and a lot of effort and would need some good drive behind it to make it happen." She aptly described skier X as "like motocross or BMX on skis".

"It's definitely pretty hard out but it's good fun and gives you a great buzz," Greig said. "The best thing is competing with your friends. At the time you're going hard but at the bottom they're still your buddies."

The former alpine racer is scheduled to undergo a shoulder operation on September 7 and, with three months' recovery looming, is anticipating her first summer in over eight years. "I've had 17 back-to-back winters. I'll go in for the slice and then be back ready to compete overseas again."

Ranked 24th in the world, Greig competes "in a different country every week" on the prestigious World Cup circuit.

"It's the pinnacle of skier X and, ultimately, I want to be at the top," she said.

It's a quest she shares with QRC team-mate Sarah Murphy, who etched her name in the history books as New Zealand's first Olympic biathlete, a discipline that combines shooting and cross-country skiing.

"Competing for New Zealand and being their first biathlete was a very proud moment for me," Murphy, 21, said.

She will strive for Snow Games gold in cross-country but has also entered boarder gravity cross "to have some fun".

Olympian takes aim at winter multisport race

Queenstown Winter Olympian Sarah Murphy isn’t winding into competition mode for Saturday’s Peak 2 Peak.

Instead, the laid-back 22-year-old biathlete is entering the popular local multisport race for fun and with few expectations.

“This year my goal is to not get a flat tyre,” she laughs.

Canadian-born Murphy, who describes herself as a “Caniwi” with a Canadian dad and a Kiwi mum, races in the solo women’s category for the second year in a row.

Last year she placed fifth with an impressive time of 3hr 26min 45sec, despite getting a flattie on the mountain bike leg.

Her first time in the race , which involves skiing or snowboarding, mountain biking, kayaking, running and road cycling, was as part of a 2008 women’s open team. They ended up winning the category.

Murphy plays down any hope of doing well this year.

“I think people have this view that Olympians are absolutely amazing people but we are just dedicated people to one discipline.

“So when you put us into unfamiliar activities we are the same or more hopeless than the average Joe because our muscles are so specific to what we are doing.”

Murphy was still trying to find a mountain bike and a road bike to compete on earlier this week – not that she’s worried about that: “It’s only an issue if you make it an issue.”

The 44km race from The Remarkables to Coronet Peak fits nicely into Murphy’s hectic training schedule.

The full-time adventure tourism management student at Queenstown Resort College juggles four days of school with training six times a week, including spending three days a week at Snow Farm in the Cardrona Valley.

After finishing 82nd in both the 7.5km sprint and 15km women’s biathlon events – comprising cross-country skiing and target shooting – at the Vancouver Olympics in February, Murphy went on to win the Canadian national champs.

She’s looking forward to racing amongst hundreds of others when the start gun fires at noon.

“Peak 2 Peak is appealing because anyone can do it and the vibe of the race is so good.”

College celebrates biggest ever intake

Leading education institution Queenstown Resort College is celebrating its biggest ever intake with 68 new students on the roll.

The new students, including New Zealand Winter Olympic stars Mitchey Greig and Sarah Murphy, started at the college last week, some taking Adventure Tourism Management studies and others studying for a Diploma in Hospitality Management.

The young Olympians – both of whom competed at the Vancouver Olympics where Sarah was the New Zealand team flag bearer -- are studying Adventure Tourism Management.

Free skier Greig, 21, who was born in Invercargill but now calls Queenstown home, said the course enabled her to continue training at Coronet Peak while providing her with an education and learning the skills to achieve her goals.

“Ultimately I want to start my own tourism business and attending QRC means I can work towards that while also training to compete in the Sochi 2014 Olympics in Russia,” she said.

Murphy, 22, who is half Canadian and half Kiwi, competes in biathlon which combines cross country skiing with shooting. She has a ten-year plan that includes the 2014 Olympics and ultimately running her own tourism business.

“As a full-time athlete, in the past I haven't had much time to study, however the programme at QRC allows me to combine my on-going training with studies. Queenstown is awesome and QRC is a great place to study for me,” she said.

Queenstown Resort College CEO Charlie Phillips said the award-winning college continued to grow its roll and attract students from around New Zealand, Australia and further afield for the two-year courses.

“Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world and for athletes like Mitchey and Sarah, who are looking to their future after their competition days are over, this gives them the opportunity to capitalise on their achievements,” he said.

The Adventure Tourism Management diploma is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. It develops successful future adventure tourism managers by blending business management and leadership skills with practical work experience and adventure education. As part of their diploma, every student receives six months of fully paid industry training with an adventure tourism business. Graduates can continue on to a Bachelor of International Tourism Thompson Rivers University in Canada.

Hospitality students also spend six to nine months working fully paid within the industry in Queenstown or around New Zealand. QRC delivers the Diploma of Hospitality Management in partnership with the International College of Management in Sydney (ICMS) and César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland. This international hotel management qualification opens the doors to higher study and exciting careers throughout the world.

“World-class professionals ready to hit the ground running” is how Queenstown Resort College CEO Charlie Phillips describes students graduating this week from the award-winning education institution.

After two years of study in Queenstown, renowned as New Zealand’s premier tourist resort and the adventure capital of the world, 49 students - 14 Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management students and 35 Diploma of Hospitality Management students - officially graduated on Friday 19th March 2010. The ceremony took place at Queenstown’s Heritage Hotel.

Following the graduation ceremony, the students attended a function at QRC Lodge, the College’s new Halls of Residence.

David Kennedy, General Manager of Ngai Tahu Tourism Southern Region and ex-Destination Queenstown CEO, was the official guest of honour, presenting each student with their diploma and giving the official Graduation Address.

Mr Kennedy says he feels privileged to be asked to impart some words of wisdom to New Zealand’s next generation of tourism and hospitality leaders.

“Tourism is the biggest and fastest growing industry in the world and qualifications are becoming crucial in order to get ahead. Queenstown is internationally renowned for its wealth of tourism and hospitality infrastructure and QRC works closely with the industry to provide students ready to move straight into the workplace.

“We’ve had several of QRC’s Adventure Tourism Diploma students work for us at Shotover Jet and Dart River Jet Safaris and we’ve been really impressed with their high standard of professionalism, commitment and understanding of the tourism business.

“As they go out into the world as fully fledged alumni following their chosen career paths, they’ll have the full support of Queenstown’s tourism and hospitality operators and I have no doubt they’ll be outstanding ambassadors both for QRC and for Queenstown.”

QRC CEO Charlie Phillips is delighted with the calibre of the graduating students.

“After getting to know these students I feel confident in saying that New Zealand’s future in the adventure tourism and hospitality industries looks extremely bright with the wealth of very talented and motivated young people going out into the work force,” he says.

“They’re world class professionals ready to hit the ground running and I think they’ll really make a difference to our industry both here and overseas.”

Mr Phillips says the college and its courses are continuing to evolve in response to industry needs.

“As part of our partnership with NZSki, we’ve just launched the first Snowsports Business Management course in the Southern Hemisphere. We now offer New Zealand’s only Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management specialising in snowsports management, aimed at producing graduates who are not only passionate about the industry but who have strong business skills. As part of their diploma, students are guaranteed a work placement at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Mt Hutt for a winter season.”

The more generalised two-year Adventure Tourism Management diploma is also the only one of its kind in New Zealand. It develops successful future adventure tourism managers by blending business management and leadership skills with practical work experience and adventure education. As part of their diploma, every student receives six months of fully paid industry training with an adventure tourism business. Graduates can continue on to a Bachelor Degree at Thompson Rivers University in Canada.

Hospitality students also spend six to nine months working fully paid within the industry in Queenstown or around New Zealand. QRC delivers the Diploma of Hospitality Management in partnership with the International College of Management in Sydney (ICMS) and César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland.
Leading NZ college launches first snowsports business management course in Southern Hemisphere

Leading education institution Queenstown Resort College has launched the first Snowsports Business Management course in the Southern Hemisphere.

The award-winning college is now offering New Zealand’s only Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management specialising in snowsports management, aimed at producing graduates who are not only passionate about the industry but who have strong business skills.

Graduates of the two-year course will have a solid understanding of the day-to-day operations and seasonality of a ski resort and will be equipped with the skills and qualifications to progress in career pathways in a competitive, challenging and exciting global industry.

QRC CEO Charlie Phillips said the diploma was being offered in partnership with NZSki Ltd, the company that operates Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt ski areas.

“It’s a great partnership because as part of this tertiary qualification, they’ll be offering guaranteed winter seasonal placements to students who successfully apply for the course, “he said.

“NZSki has identified that it needs to employ skilled and trained middle to senior managers, and by partnering with us on this course they’ll hopefully end up with students who are their future leaders.”

Mr Phillips said QRC had been working towards offering this diploma specialization for the past two years.

The first students will start this winter, doing their internship with NZSki from June before heading into campus-based learning. Further intakes will be taken on in October 2010 and January 2011 and each student will complete 900 hours of placement with NZSki, over two seasonal placements.

NZSki Ltd CEO James Coddington said the company was proud to be working with QRC.

“We take the responsibility of professional development very seriously and have created a programme that will create an environment of fun, accomplishment and personal growth,” he said.

“We’re looking for employees who are passionate about the snowsports industry and who are committed to delivering exceptional customer service and demonstrating inspiring leadership throughout their career.”

Mr Phillips said the course was expected to attract students from around New Zealand, Australia and further afield.

“We’ll take up to 24 students on any one intake and as I know of only one other similar course in the world, we’re anticipating strong demand.

“Not only are there the value-added benefits of free ski passes and uniforms to students on this course, but they’ll be able to apply for work and travel visas as QRC students that will enable them to apply for seasonal employment at North American ski resorts when they’ve finished their diploma.

“If they want to take their learning further, they can take their diploma to degree level thanks to QRC’s partnerships with the International College of Management in Sydney or Thompson Rivers University in Canada.”

Sir Eion "humbled" by recognition as Senior New Zealander of the Year

Queenstown-based businessman Sir Eion Edgar said today (Thursday February 4) he was “humbled” to be recognised as the Ryman Healthcare Senior New Zealander of the Year in a national awards ceremony.

Sir Eion, 65, speaking following the Auckland gala awards presentation on Wednesday night, won the award for his lifetime of philanthropic service.

“It was an amazing night because it recognised a great variety of people across all sectors of the community, and I was proud to be amongst those,” he said.

Sir Eion said there were many other people who “did a lot of good” who were not always recognised for their work.

“Hopefully this award will alert people to the fact that they can get a lot of pleasure out of helping organisations, as I do.”

Sir Eion said he was looking forward to spending more time working with Queenstown Resort College, of which he is chairman and founder. He is also involved with a full range of education, youth, health, community trusts and financial organisations of which he is either chairman, trustee or board member.

As part of his award, Sir Eion received a $5,000 donation towards his work from principal sponsor Kiwibank.

“I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the money as yet, but it may be going to Diabetes Research or something in Queenstown. I certainly will be spending it and probably adding to it because I’ve already made some serious commitments to helping out organisations such as the Wakatipu Trails Trust.”

Queenstown Resort College CEO Charlie Phillips said if Sir Eion’s contribution to the college was anything to measure him by, then he thoroughly deserved the award.

“The faith, financial support and personal involvement he has demonstrated for such a pioneering enterprise as QRC has been amazing, and to do this in such a positive and proactive way is something you can’t help but admire.

“Without Sir Eion, QRC and many other enterprises would not exist, meaning New Zealand is a better place with him in it.”

Business Award recognises Queenstown College

A forward-thinking Queenstown education institution has been recognised for its business excellence in developing a new market sector for the resort town.

Queenstown Resort College (QRC) won the medium business category (10-50 employees) at the Westpac Queenstown Business Excellence Awards last Friday (27 November).

The college came up against some stiff competition but the panel of judges for the awards, organised by the local Chamber of Commerce, said they thought QRC’s forward-thinking approach to education gave them the edge.

The college has quadrupled its intake numbers since it opened in 2006 and recently bought former hotel Queenstown Lodge to offer accommodation to its growing roll of students.

The financial investment future-proofs the college’s infrastructure needs and marks the first step in its long term vision of establishing a student campus in Queenstown.

“QRC has put a lot of investment into the region, particularly with the purchase of the lodge,” said awards judge Mike Sutherland.

“It’s hard creating a new learning institution outside of a large city but QRC’s strategy appears to be working and they’re going full steam ahead in the market.”

QRC CEO Charlie Phillips was on hand to accept the award at the gala dinner and said he was delighted his team had received such high recognition.

“This win reinforces our work to ensure tertiary study is a now a serious option in Queenstown.

“QRC is committed to ensuring the region becomes known as an outstanding place to gain a high level education and we’re proud to have introduced a totally new way of attracting people to the region.”

Queenstown college announces major infrastructure development

Queenstown Resort College (QRC) is investing in the future of tertiary education in the Southern Lakes region by creating a centralised accommodation base for its students.

QRC has purchased Queenstown Lodge, a former hotel in the suburb of Fernhill, and plans to turn it into a 61-room Halls of Residence called ‘QRC Lodge’ in time for its January 2010 intake.

The major financial investment future-proofs the college’s infrastructure needs and marks the first step in its long term vision of establishing a student campus in Queenstown.

QRC has spent more than a year searching for the right site to accommodate its students. Up until now it has leased apartments around the town.

QRC CEO Charlie Phillips says owning accommodation means the college has control over its intake numbers and can service demand.

“We’re committed to Queenstown as an education destination and a serious place for study. Having our own accommodation will be a real drawcard in attracting national and international students and will mean we’ll be comparable to any other tertiary education institution in New Zealand. The site also has excellent potential for future development in terms of our long term vision to create a campus.”

Mr Phillips says the Lodge provides the opportunity to create a training ground for the college’s hospitality students.

“We have a strong emphasis on practical learning so we’re turning the kitchen into a training kitchen and will simulate real life hotel management scenarios,” he says.

QRC Lodge will have full time managers on site and each wing will be managed by students selected as ‘residential assistants’.

Rent will be comparable to other halls of residence around New Zealand. All rooms are ensuite and meals will be included in the price. Students will be provided with breakfast seven days a week and dinner five nights a week and can use the community kitchen to prepare other meals.

“Our aim is to provide our students with reasonably priced convenient accommodation in a safe and comfortable environment. Queenstown Lodge is close to town, has a regular bus service and great facilities. It already has a tennis court and we’ll also be installing a gym to encourage our students to get active in their free time.

“Promoting a healthy lifestyle is part of the culture of the college. We find attitude ties into results so we’re working to build a culture of students who are serious about working hard, enjoy being active in the environment and who respect their surroundings. We believe they’ll take that philosophy with them when they go out into the workplace.”

QRC opened in 2006 with nine students and has increased its capacity to 160 this year. Mr Phillips expects numbers to increase to approximately 250 students in 2010.

Queenstown Resort College offers diplomas in Hospitality Management and Adventure Tourism Management, personal and leadership development courses, and customised programmes.

Adventure Tourism graduate zips up a new career

The future is looking bright for recent Queenstown Resort College (QRC) graduate Kate James who’s just landed a job at Ziptrek, one of Queenstown’s newest and most exciting adventure tourism operations.

With a two-year Diploma in Adventure Tourism Management under her belt, Kate is now working behind the scenes to help launch Ziptrek in Queenstown this summer. The flying fox-type eco adventure is already popular overseas and Queenstown will be its first New Zealand operation.

It was Kate’s passion for the adventure tourism industry which led her to study at Queenstown Resort College.

“Queenstown’s such a fantastic place – if you’re going to study adventure tourism anywhere then it should definitely be in the adventure capital of the world! I wanted to build a career in the industry and QRC’s diploma offered the perfect combination of practical and management skills.”

Taught by experienced industry practitioners, the diploma aims to develop successful future adventure tourism managers by blending business management and leadership skills with hands-on adventure education and a nine-month fully paid internship with an adventure tourism company.

Kate’s internship was with Queenstown Sea Kayaks and as the company’s Administration Manager she was exposed to all aspects of the company’s operation.

“I got to see how everything was done firsthand and the theory and business management paper I learnt in class were far more valuable and relevant to the industry than I ever imagined,” she says.

Kate’s final six months of study comprised business papers like Business Development & Strategy, Managerial Accounting, and the Tourism Law & Resource Management Act - all imperative to what Kate believes will make her a successful manager.

“There’s no way I would have been considered for this role without my QRC qualification,” Kate says. “I’ve hit the ground running and now I’m working for a dynamic international company that I see a great future with.”

View & order your copies of QRC Graduation Photographs 2009 photos online.

Saturday 21st March 2009 saw QRC host its second graduation ceremony, at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown. It was an extra special occasion as not only was it the inaugural graduation of the Adventure Tourism Management students but the Hon. Bill English Deputy Prime Minister attended to present the students with their diplomas. He spoke of how Queenstown Resort College plays a special role in the education system and told the students they were the future leaders of the tourism industry. In all 44 students graduated although not all were able to attend the ceremony. With many of them now spread around the world from Zimbabwe to The United Kingdom, India and Singapore it was evident that many of them are using their skills to explore the world. The Hon. Bill English did remind the graduates that New Zealand needs their skills and to please return here one day and put them to use.

After attending the ceremony the graduates, their families and friends were invited back to the college for drinks and canapés and a chance to catch up with old classmates and staff members. A great afternoon was had by all, the proud looks on the parents faces certainly demonstrated this.

Olympic Games for QRC student

QRC Adventure Tourism Management Student, Makoto Bruderer secured her internship with yacht company Sail NZ in Auckland and, through them, has been given the opportunity of a lifetime to sail abroad Endeavour all the way to the Beijing Olympics.

Here, she writes of her adventures in her own words:

"Hi All,

I have now been in Japan for a week.

We sailed out of Auckland, passing the Pacific Islands to Japan in June which took us about a month. Luckily we had very good weather, so no storms, but light winds. It was a very nice trip, we had a stopover in Vanuatu, Pohnpei (Micronesia) and Guam.

From Japan we went to Gingdao for the Olympic Games. We arrived in China in early August and spent the whole Olympics there. Our yacht Endeavour was a VIP boat and we went out daily to see the regattas. It was amazing to be so close to the Games and to be even part of it. During the evenings we usually had some athletes or coaches coming over to our boat and have some drinks - we were amazed to hang out with the athletes and to hear that we were special to them as Endeavour is one of the most prestigious yachts with a long history (America's Cup in 1934). Most of the sailors knew Endeavour from before and we took some of them out sailing.

My position on the boat is Stewardess. During deliveries, everybody is working on deck. We have shifts of usually 3 hours when we sail and drive the boat. As we are 3 watch teams, we rotate and every 6 hours have a watch of 3 hours.

The sail back from China to Japan was very rough. We had winds up to 50 knots and big waves and lots and lots of rain. For five days we were just wet, the waves hit us sometimes while steering.

I got this job in Auckland through a friend of mine who told the captain about me. Actually I first turned the offer down, because I wanted to come back to QRC. But when they told me about the schedule and the Olympic Games I changed my mind. Being included in the Olympic Games was, and is, very unique and a great experience.

I have now been offered a fulltime position on the boat and I think I will stay till next June and then come back to QRC to finish my studies. As per plan the boat is going back to NZ, then Florida, the US and then to Portugal. Sounds wicked to me"!

QRC celebrates first Graduation

New Zealand's newest Tourism and Hospitality Management educator has just graduated its first class of students.

Queenstown Resort College opened its doors in March 2006 offering the Swiss-based Diploma of Hospitality Management in association with the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) and César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland.

The first class of Hospitality Management students arrived on the QRC campus in April 2006 to begin their internationally-recognised qualification.

They have now become the College's first Graduates.

College CEO, Emeritus Associate Jan Fitz-Gerald says the students are ‘pioneers'.

"These students took a risk and came to QRC when the College had only just opened because they believed in us. Now it is up to them to set the scene for future QRC graduates".

César Ritz Colleges President, Martin Kisseleff attended as the Guest of Honour and also gave the Graduation Address, where he spoke about hospitality being a ‘craft'.

"We cannot standardize all aspects of service delivery, since customers are individuals, this means that we need to train professionals who understand how to identify customers preferences, intercultural communication, teamwork, respect and tolerance. And not to forget we need to train entrepreneurs, who understand well the business principals and produce sustainable profits to be able to make further investments. Queenstown competes with top resorts in Europe, Asia and the Americas - to compete, one needs to benchmark and gain experience within the competitive environment".

Only in the second full year of operation, the College is proud to have had full intakes in January and April this year, with good numbers already enrolled for the year's two remaining intakes; July and October.

Hospitality students organise charity event

Celebrity chef, Jason Dell, is lending a hand to help QRC Hospitality Management students organise and run a charity dinner to raise money for the trust, Children’s Protection Studies (CPS).

The class of second-year Diploma of Hospitality Management students are in the throes of planning and running the event which will be the culmination of their Operations Management and Cost Control paper.

Tickets are on sale now and prices include a three course dinner personally designed and cooked by chef Jason Dell, with wines to match each course. The Charity dinner will also feature a mystery guest speaker and live entertainment.

With the help of sponsors such as the Crowne Plaza, the dinner will be held on December 15th 2007 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Tickets for the night are: $100 per person
Or $750 per table (8 people)

The students have chosen to raise funds for CPS because of the distressing rise in child abuse cases seen in New Zealand this year – and CPS is a national charitable trust, dedicated to preventing harm and violence to children in New Zealand. As a strong advocate for the rights of children, CPS promotes, encourages and supports prevention activities and efforts at a local and national level, through individual and community programmes.

It is estimated that each year in New Zealand:

Every month one child is killed through physical abuse

9,800 children are hospitalized with preventable injuries

There is a $5.32 billion fiscal and economic cost to New Zealand on the long term effects of childhood abuse

Approximately 15% of children are born at risk

More than 80,000 children are witnesses of family violence

One family member is killed through family violence every 12½ days

2008 Scholarship Winners Announced!

QRC is thrilled to announce Garin College student, Nikolai Heaphy-Page, as the winner of the 2008 QRC Diploma of Adventure Tourism Management Scholarship and Havlock North High School student, Adam Tomlinson, as the winner of the 2008 QRC Diploma of Hospitality Management Scholarship.

The scholarships have been established to identify two New Zealander teenagers who would become outstanding ambassadors for QRC, and to give them the opportunity to have a world class education. The scholarships cover the full tuition fee to the value of $25,000 for the duration of the 2 year programmes.

Adam’s outstanding application and interview performance made him a clear choice for the panel of judges said the Head of the Tourism and Hospitality School, Mr Harvey Bourne.

“Adam impressed us with his professionalism and leadership qualities. Not only was his dress and manner of the highest quality and exactly what we want QRC students to embrace, but he also proved his commitment and passion for the industry to us through the work experience in wineries and restaurants that he has already gained - and we firmly believe that he has the potential to make a great manager. ”

And Nikolai was just what Adventure Tourism Management programme manager, Dr John Cossens was looking for.

"While it was very close with some very strong applicants, the scholarship panel felt Nikolai was a very well rounded young man who typified what the programme and its graduates are about, namely; articulate, intelligent, has a love of the outdoors and sport, passionate about adventure, has a great work ethic and committed to high levels of customer service. We think he will be a great ambassador for QRC."

QRC received dozens of brilliant applications from students and schools across the country with 11 making it through to the final interview stage.

Congratulations to you both and we look forward to seeing you on campus in 2008!

Diploma Courses Receive Government Funding, Domestic Fees Subsidised

It was announced in February that the two diploma programmes will receive government funding and confirmed that students will continue to have access to interest-free loans and allowances through Study Link.

QRC tuition fees for domestic students will now be $12,500 per year including course-related costs. Students are eligible to borrow the whole amount through Study Link.

QRC management are delighted with this outcome after several months of discussion with TEC and applaud the recognition that TEC have afforded our two programmes.

In sharing the news with our local Queenstown tourism industry Carlos Braddock, General Manager of the Novotel Gardens Queenstown, commented that "this positive signal from government was both exciting and encouraging for the New Zealand and Queenstown tourism industries and the projected staff shortages and skills issues that we face in the immediate future."
