A Colourful and Dramatic History

New Zealand's history is unique, dominated by the relationship between Maori and the Europeans or Pakeha. The Maori were New Zealand's first settlers, arriving on its shores about 1000 years ago. Today's New Zealand culture is a rich blend of European, Maori, Pacific and Asian influences. The Treaty of Waitangi is central to New Zealand's law and society. Signed in 1840 by the British Crown and Maori, it established British law in New Zealand as well as guaranteeing Maori authority over their land and culture.

The first documented European to discover New Zealand was Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, who came here in 1642 in search of the fabled great southern continent. In 1769, Captain James Cook claimed it for Britain and produced a map of the country.

Fun, friendly and fascinating people

New Zealanders or 'Kiwis' are well known for their open manner, honesty and friendliness. These laid-back, friendly folk give a warm welcome to visitors as they travel the North and South Islands. If someone says 'Kia ora' to you... they are saying 'hello and welcome' in Maori!
